Instead of NaNoWriMo, I'm going to aim for a short essay every day on a topic I feel like yammering about.

I tested 3 different varieties of chocolate baking chips today. For SCIENCE.

(By "tested" I mean "ate." I did not test these in baked goods.)

I wanted chocolate and wasn't sure which kind to get. I've learned that anything with "chocolate liquor" is devastating to my insides, so that cut out a few options. I settled on 3; all semi-sweet or darker because that's how I roll.

3. Nestle Semi-Sweet Chunks $2.48/11.5oz
Ingredients (6): sugar, chocolate, milkfat, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, natural flavors
Least favorite. Classic, too-sweet chocolate chip flavor with some other unidentifiable flavors that reminded me of cheap chocolate. Good shape to the chunks, texture acceptable. Not as chocolate-y as I prefer.

2. Ghiradelli Grand Chips Semi-Sweet Chocolate $3.99/11oz
Ingredients (6): sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, soy lecithin, vanilla extract
So close! Excellent shape/size for snacking. Strong chocolate flavor. Distinct vanilla flavor with an almost alcoholic edge. Good texture. Too much vanilla for my preferences; when I want chocolate, that's all I want. I'll add my own vanilla.

1. Nestle Simply Delicious Dark Chocolate Morsels $4.99/9oz
Ingredients (3): organic chocolate, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa butter
WINNER! Pure chocolate flavor, no complications, no unusual aftertastes. Good texture. A little too small for my snacking preferences, personally (these were normal "chocolate chip" sized morsels). Downside: eeeeeexpensive! Definitely need to watch for sales and coupons on these. Still more economical than buying candy bars or pre-packaged chocolate of this caliber.

Stirring chocolate chips into some almond butter with a touch of maple syrup makes a great substitute for cookie dough. I add some Benefiber to mine because I like what it does for the texture. I also like melting some chocolate chips on a rice cake, preferably a caramel-flavored rice cake.

I may do some further comparisons with other brands someday. For now, I guess I'll mix all 3 together. The real challenge is eating them at a reasonable rate. I don't understand me. I could have Orrin hide them and parcel them out to me. [g]

Ooo, I might check out those winners when I'm ready to reintroduce refined sugar! Thank you for the recommendation.
