Chocolate chips (Part 2!)
In November, I did a rundown of some chocolate chips in my yammering sessions. There are lots of those in the world, so...
I tested 3 more varieties of chocolate baking chips today. For SCIENCE.
(By "tested" I mean "ate." I did not test these in baked goods.)
I wanted chocolate and wasn't sure which kind to get. I've learned that anything with "chocolate liquor" is devastating to my insides, so that cut out a few options. I settled on 3; all semi-sweet or darker because that's how I roll.
3. SunSpire Organic Bittersweet Chocolate Chips 65% cacao $5.49/9oz
Ingredients (5): organic unsweetened chocolate, organic sugar, organic cocoa powder, organic cocoa butter, organic vanilla (with milk).
Least favorite. There is a weird flavor to these I can't put words to but it is gross. Maybe burnt sugar? They have a smell that doesn't fit with my mental concept of chocolate chips, and the flavor is just... off. I've also tried the Carob chips by this same company, and I did not care for those, either. If anyone wants most of a bag of carob chips and these chocolate chips, hit me up, they're yours.
2. Enjoy Life 100% Real Chocolate Morsels - Dark 69% cacao $4.79/9oz
Ingredients (2): unsweetened chocolate, sugar
It's hard not to be a little impressed by chocolate chips with only 2 ingredients. I'm a bit skeptical that "unsweetened chocolate" might comprise more than 1 ingredient, but still, short list. These are the ultimate allergy-friendly chocolate chip. Good texture, tasty, eminently serviceable chocolate chip.
1. Guittard Extra Dark Chocolate Baking Chips 63% cacao $2.99/11.5oz
Ingredients (4): Cacao beans, sugar, sunflower lecithin, vanilla
WINNER! Pure chocolate flavor with a hint of vanilla, no unusual smells or aftertastes. Good texture - pleasant to bite into. The morsels themselves have a nice "finish" to them, almost a satin sheen. Very visually appealing. Killer price, too, compared to all the other kinds I've tried to date.
When I'm through these, maybe I'll try 3 more!
